I always had mine set to self unit damage, radar, communication, target enemy damage. Remap the fire button to the right trigger (so you can leave your thumb on the stick while you fire) Then I would map the dpad to the different f-key functions you use. (I did this on es2 but not es1 because I didn't know at the time that steam wasn't mapping the controller unless I forced it on.) Thinking about it now, I would map the right stick to turret up, down, left, right. This lets you use the map and give radio commands without needing to reach for a mouse. If you have a ps4 controller, find a way to turn its gyro into a mouse and allocate one of the js buttons to left click. Map your controllers extra buttons to keyboard buttons. You can press ctrl-f1 to get to the mapper when its running. Dos didn't support as many buttons as modern controllers today so the game can't use them however dosbox can. Yeah you should patch it to use extra buttons and axis. It ran like a champ and I managed to play through the campaign in full with original music from my cd and full gamepad support. I used oggmm because gamepad wouldn't work with _inmm maybe it works for some people? Anyways I added starsiege as a 3rd party game into steam and then used the controller remapping in steam to let me use my ps4 controller's gyro for mouse and full key mapping including right stick for turret movement and left stick for movement. (Make a music folder and put the soundtrack in it in ogg format with the correct filenames). From there you can follow the instructions at the github link. Then put your replacement winmm.dll as winmx.dll in the earthsiege 2 directory. change the second M to X so it says WINMX. You should see it next to DDRAW.dll and MSVFW32.DLL. (I've read you can use compat toolkit to allow this to be replaced so the following may not be necessary) I did a hexedit of DBSIM.EXE (back this file up in case you screw up). First I went to released and got a copy of the replacement winmm.dll. To fix the music I used /maximilien-noal/ogg-winmm/. I followed instructions I saw in a youtube video ( ) to get most of the game running but there was no music.

I managed to install the compat toolkit from this and successfully ran earthsiege 2 on my windows 10 laptop. The compat toolkit was superceded by the Windows ADK (application kit and deployment kit).
